Mysterious Traveler’s Toolkit
Everything you need to explore the haunted, strange and unexplained.
Plan Your Mysterious Trip
Every mysterious adventure has to start somewhere.
Maybe you’re planning a weekend of ghost hunting in one of America’s most haunted cities, traveling to Salem for Halloween, searching for cryptid legends on a road trip, or finally booking a stay at that haunted hotel that’s been sitting on your bucket list.
Whatever mystery you’re chasing, you’ll still need somewhere to sleep, a way to get there, and a few practical travel essentials along the way.
These are our favorite resources for planning the less-than-ordinary adventures you’ll find on Mysterious Travels.
๐๏ธ Find Somewhere to Stay
A great hotel can be more than somewhere to sleepโsometimes it’s part of the adventure.
We love searching for historic hotels, supposedly haunted properties, old inns, castles, unusual accommodations, and hotels within walking distance of the mysterious places we’re exploring.
Even when we’re not staying somewhere haunted, location matters. Being close to historic districts can make it much easier to explore cemeteries, take late-night ghost tours, visit museums, and wander through older parts of a city without spending half the trip driving.
Use our recommended hotel booking sites to compare accommodations, prices, locations, and guest reviews before booking your stay.
[Search Hotels โ]
โ๏ธ Find Flights
Unfortunately, the ghosts haven’t figured out teleportation yet.
For destinations that are too far away for a paranormal road trip, comparing flights can help you find the best combination of price, travel time, and arrival times.
When possible, we like arriving early enough to get settled before exploringโespecially when we have an evening ghost tour or paranormal experience planned for our first night.
For international trips, we also recommend checking several airports and comparing flexible dates. Moving your trip by even a day or two can sometimes make a surprising difference in airfare.
[Search Flights โ]
๐ Rent a Car
Some mysterious places aren’t conveniently located next to a train station.
Ghost towns, abandoned mining communities, cryptid sighting locations, historic cemeteries, rural haunted attractions, and unusual roadside stops are often easiestโor sometimes only possibleโto reach by car.
Having your own vehicle also gives you the freedom to turn a normal drive into a mysterious road trip, stopping at strange landmarks and local legends along the way.
We recommend comparing rental companies before booking rather than automatically choosing the first option available at the airport.
[Compare Rental Cars โ]
๐ป Book Ghost Tours & Unusual Experiences
This is usually the first thing we search for when planning a new destination.
Ghost tours can be a fantastic introduction to a city’s darker history, but they’re only the beginning.
Depending on where you’re traveling, you might find:
- Ghost walks and haunted history tours
- Paranormal investigations
- Haunted pub crawls
- Cemetery tours
- True-crime tours
- Witchcraft and folklore tours
- Vampire tours
- Voodoo history tours
- Dark tourism experiences
- Underground and catacomb tours
- After-hours historic-site tours
- Cryptid and UFO experiences
We recommend searching before your trip, especially when visiting popular paranormal destinations around Halloween or other major events, when smaller tours can sell out well in advance.
[Find Ghost Tours & Unusual Experiences โ]
๐ก๏ธ Protect Your Trip
Ghosts might be unpredictable, but unfortunately, so are flights.
Travel insurance can provide protection for certain unexpected situations involving cancellations, delays, medical emergencies, lost luggage, and other problems that can disrupt a trip.
It’s something we especially consider for international travel, cruises, expensive trips, or itineraries involving prepaid hotels, tours, and experiences.
Always read the individual policy carefully before purchasing so you know exactly what isโand isn’tโcovered.
[Compare Travel Insurance โ]
๐ฑ Stay Connected
Having reliable internet access while traveling has become one of our biggest travel necessities.
We use our phones constantly for:
- Maps and directions
- Digital tickets
- Hotel reservations
- Translation
- Transportation schedules
- Tour information
- Researching places we discover along the way
- Finding somewhere to eat after a late-night ghost tour
For international travel, an eSIM can be an easy alternative to purchasing a physical SIM card after arriving.
Just make sure your phone is unlocked and compatible with the eSIM provider before purchasing a plan.
[Find an eSIM โ]
๐ Getting Around Without a Car
Not every mysterious adventure requires driving.
In destinations with good public transportation, trains and buses can often be cheaper and easier than renting a carโespecially when you’re exploring historic city centers where parking can be difficult.
Rail travel can also be part of the adventure. It’s particularly useful when planning trips through Europe and Japan, where you can visit several cities without needing to rent a vehicle.
For longer trips, we recommend comparing:
- Trains
- Intercity buses
- Airport transfers
- Public transportation passes
- Private transfers
- Rideshares
Before leaving, save your hotel address and important transportation information somewhere you can access offline. You don’t want losing cell service to become the scariest part of your trip.
[Find Trains & Transportation โ]
Ready to Chase Your Next Mystery?
You don’t need to build your entire vacation around the paranormal to travel mysteriously.
Book the hotel. Explore the historic district. Visit the famous attractions.
Then leave a little room in your itinerary for the cemetery with the strange legend, the haunted inn everyone in town knows about, the bizarre roadside attraction you discovered while researching, or the ghost tour that doesn’t start until after dark.
Sometimes those unexpected stops become the stories you remember most.
Start planning your next mysterious adventure โ
Find Haunted Experiences
Some of our favorite travel memories have started after the sun goes down.
A ghost tour or paranormal experience is one of the best ways to discover a completely different side of a destination. Beyond the ghost stories, these tours often take you through historic neighborhoods, cemeteries, old hotels, forgotten buildings, and places connected to darker chapters of local history that you might otherwise walk right past.
And you don’t necessarily have to believe in ghosts to enjoy one.
Whether you’re hoping to conduct your own paranormal investigation or simply want to hear the legends surrounding a centuries-old city, there are plenty of ways to add something mysterious to your itinerary.
๐ป Ghost Tours
Ghost tours are usually the first thing we search for when visiting somewhere new.
Walking tours are particularly good for exploring historic cities such as Salem, Savannah, New Orleans, Charleston, Edinburgh, and St. Augustine, where centuries of historyโand plenty of ghost storiesโare packed into relatively small areas.
Depending on the destination, you may also find haunted trolley tours, ghost cruises, haunted pub crawls, theatrical tours, and adults-only experiences that dive deeper into a city’s darker history.
[Find Ghost Tours โ]
๐ฆ Paranormal Investigations
Want to do more than listen to ghost stories?
Some haunted locations offer after-hours paranormal investigations where visitors can explore the property with investigators and use equipment such as EMF meters, digital recorders, REM pods, spirit boxes, and infrared cameras.
These experiences range from beginner-friendly investigations where equipment is provided to longer overnight events designed for experienced paranormal investigators.
Always check the rules before booking. Some locations allow you to bring your own equipment, while others restrict photography, recording devices, or certain types of paranormal equipment.
[Find Paranormal Experiences โ]
๐ชฆ Cemetery & Dark History Tours
Cemeteries can tell you an incredible amount about a destination’s history.
Guided cemetery tours often explore historic graves, unusual monuments, burial traditions, local legends, famous residents, and the symbolism hidden throughout old cemeteries.
You can also find dark-history experiences centered around historic prisons, disasters, executions, epidemics, battlefields, underground tunnels, catacombs, and other difficult chapters of the past.
These aren’t always paranormal experiencesโand they don’t need to be. Sometimes the true history behind a destination is more fascinating than the ghost stories.
[Find Cemetery & Dark History Tours โ]
๐ True Crime Tours
For travelers interested in the darker side of history, true-crime tours explore real cases connected to the streets and buildings around you.
Depending on the destination, tours might cover historic murders, infamous criminals, unsolved mysteries, organized crime, notorious trials, or cases that permanently changed a city.
Look for tours that focus on historical context and documented events rather than sensationalizing victims or turning tragedy into entertainment.
[Find True Crime Tours โ]
๐ง Witches, Vampires & Local Legends
Not every mystery involves ghosts.
Some destinations have centuries of folklore surrounding witchcraft, vampires, monsters, curses, magic, superstition, and other supernatural legends.
You might explore witch-trial history in Salem, vampire folklore in New Orleans, voodoo history and traditions, European legends, or stories about creatures that supposedly lurk just outside town.
These experiences are especially interesting when they separate historical events, traditional folklore, and modern legends, allowing you to understand how the stories evolved over time.
[Find Folklore & Supernatural Tours โ]
๐ฝ Cryptid & UFO Experiences
Sometimes you have to leave the haunted house behind and go looking for something stranger.
Destinations associated with Bigfoot, Mothman, lake monsters, UFO sightings, extraterrestrial encounters, and other unexplained phenomena may have museums, festivals, guided excursions, walking tours, or roadside attractions dedicated to their local legends.
Even if you don’t expect to stumble across Bigfoot on vacation, these experiences can be a fun way to discover the folklore that has become part of a community’s identity.
[Find Cryptid & UFO Experiences โ]
๐ฏ๏ธ How to Choose a Haunted Experience
Not all ghost tours are created equal.
Before booking, take a few minutes to check what kind of experience you’re actually getting.
Some tours focus heavily on documented history, while others lean into storytelling and theatrical scares. Paranormal investigations may give you hours inside a supposedly haunted building, while a traditional ghost walk might never actually enter one.
We recommend checking:
- How long the experience lasts
- How much walking is involved
- Whether you enter haunted locations or view them from outside
- Age restrictions
- Accessibility
- Photography and recording rules
- Whether paranormal equipment is provided
- Group size
- Cancellation policies
- Recent traveler reviews
- Whether the tour is historical, theatrical, paranormal, or a combination
And if you’re visiting a famous haunted destination around Halloween, book early. Popular tours and nighttime experiences can sell out weeksโor even monthsโahead of time.
Find Something Strange to Do
A mysterious trip doesn’t have to mean spending every night hunting ghosts.
Sometimes one ghost tour, cemetery walk, paranormal investigation, or strange local legend is enough to turn an ordinary itinerary into something you’ll still be talking about years later.
So wherever you’re headed next, take a look at what’s hiding beyond the usual sightseeing tours.
You might be surprised by what you find.
[Search Haunted & Unusual Experiences โ]
Stay Somewhere Strange
Why stay at an ordinary hotel when your accommodations can become part of the adventure?
Some of our favorite places to stay have a little more history, character, or mystery behind them. Think centuries-old inns with resident ghost stories, grand historic hotels, castles, converted monasteries, former prisons, secluded cabins, and unusual properties you won’t find on every vacation.
You don’t necessarily need to book the most haunted room in the building, either. Sometimes staying somewhere with an incredible history is enough to make a trip feel a little more mysterious.
Here are some of our favorite types of accommodations to look for when planning a Mysterious Travels-worthy getaway.
๐ป Haunted Hotels
For paranormal travelers, it doesn’t get much better than spending the night somewhere that’s supposedly haunted.
Across the world, you’ll find historic hotels associated with ghost sightings, unexplained footsteps, mysterious voices, objects moving on their own, and former guests who may have never completely checked out.
Some properties embrace their haunted reputations with ghost tours, paranormal packages, and information about their resident spirits. Others barely acknowledge the stories at all.
Before booking, research the property’s history and find out whether the alleged activity is associated with a particular room, floor, or part of the building.
And remember: a haunted reputation isn’t a guarantee that anything paranormal will happen during your stay.
Sometimes you get a ghost.
Sometimes you just get a really beautiful old hotel.
We’re perfectly happy with either.
[Find Haunted Hotels โ]
๐ฐ Castles & Historic Estates
If you’re looking for atmosphere, it’s difficult to compete with a castle.
Depending on where you’re traveling, you can spend the night in medieval castles, grand country estates, manor houses, chรขteaux, fortified homes, and historic residences that have been converted into hotels.
These properties can be especially fun for mysterious travelers because they often come with centuries of historyโand occasionally a ghost story or two.
Even without the paranormal legends, sleeping inside a building that has survived wars, political upheaval, family scandals, and generations of residents is an experience of its own.
[Find Castle & Historic Stays โ]
๐ฏ๏ธ Historic Inns & Bed and Breakfasts
You don’t need a massive castle to find somewhere atmospheric.
Historic inns and bed and breakfasts are often located inside Victorian homes, former taverns, old farmhouses, historic mansions, and centuries-old buildings filled with architectural details you simply don’t get from a modern hotel.
They can also be particularly convenient when exploring older towns and historic districts, putting you within walking distance of cemeteries, museums, historic homes, ghost tours, and local legends.
And because many have relatively few rooms, you may get to learn more about the property’s history directly from the people who know it best.
[Find Historic Inns & B&Bs โ]
โช Sleep Somewhere With a Past
Some accommodations have had entire lives before becoming hotels.
Around the world, former monasteries, convents, churches, prisons, hospitals, schools, train stations, factories, and other historic buildings have been transformed into places where travelers can spend the night.
For us, that’s part of the appeal.
You’re not simply staying in a hotelโyou might be sleeping somewhere people have lived, worked, worshiped, traveled, or even been imprisoned for generations.
Some conversions preserve original architectural details and artifacts, allowing you to see pieces of the building’s former life throughout your stay.
[Find Converted Historic Hotels โ]
๐ฒ Remote Cabins & Atmospheric Escapes
Not every strange stay needs centuries of history behind it.
Sometimes it’s all about the setting.
A cabin deep in the woods, tiny house beneath the stars, secluded cottage, desert retreat, or isolated mountain lodge can be the perfect base for exploring cryptid country, UFO hotspots, dark-sky destinations, ghost towns, mysterious forests, and rural legends.
These stays are particularly useful when the places you’re visiting aren’t anywhere near a major city.
Just remember that remote accommodations may mean limited cell service, fewer nearby restaurants, unpaved roads, and longer drives for supplies.
Plan accordinglyโespecially if your mysterious adventure takes you somewhere truly off the beaten path.
[Find Remote & Unusual Stays โ]
๐ฎ Unusual Places to Stay
Then there are the accommodations that are simply…weird.
And we mean that as a compliment.
Depending on where you travel, you might find places to stay inside:
- Historic lighthouses
- Caves
- Treehouses
- Train cars
- Old schools
- Former jails
- Boats
- Underground rooms
- Tiny houses
- Historic firehouses
- Themed hotels
- Unusual architectural landmarks
They may not be haunted or connected to a dark history, but they’re exactly the kind of places that can turn where you slept into one of the most memorable parts of the trip.
[Find Unique Places to Stay โ]
๐๏ธ How to Choose a Strange Place to Stay
An amazing story doesn’t automatically make an amazing hotel.
No matter how haunted, historic, or unusual a property might be, we still recommend checking the practical details before booking.
Look at:
- Recent guest reviews
- Location and transportation
- Parking availability
- Air conditioning and heating
- Private versus shared bathrooms
- Accessibility
- Wi-Fi and cell service
- Check-in and check-out procedures
- Cancellation policies
- Nearby restaurants and stores
- Photography rules
- Age restrictions
- Whether ghost tours or paranormal investigations are available
Historic properties can also come with quirks. You may encounter steep staircases, small elevators, creaky floors, unusual room layouts, limited electrical outlets, or accessibility challenges.
For some travelers, that’s part of the charm.
For others, knowing ahead of time can make the difference between an atmospheric night and a miserable one.
A Hotel Can Be Part of the Story
We love a convenient hotel as much as anyone, but every once in a while, it’s worth choosing somewhere you’ll remember long after you’ve forgotten the room number.
Stay in the Victorian inn.
Book the castle.
Spend the night in the old jail.
Reserve the supposedly haunted room.
Because when you’re traveling in search of the strange and unexplained, your adventure doesn’t necessarily have to end when you return to your hotel.
Sometimes that’s where the mystery begins.

Gear & Essentials for Mysterious Travelers
Exploring haunted locations, wandering historic cemeteries, joining late-night ghost tours, and photographing mysterious destinations can require a few things you probably wouldn’t pack for the average vacation.
Instead of trying to fit every flashlight, camera, ghost-hunting gadget, and travel essential onto one page, we’ve created guides dedicated to the gear we actually useโor recommend consideringโfor different kinds of mysterious adventures.
Choose what you’re planning below to start building your kit.
๐ป Ghost Hunting Gear
You don’t need a van full of blinking equipment to investigate somewhere that’s supposedly haunted.
If you’re curious about paranormal investigation, start with the basics and learn what each piece of equipment is actually designed to do before spending hundreds of dollars on specialized gear.
Our ghost-hunting guides cover everything from EMF meters and digital voice recorders to REM pods, spirit boxes, thermal cameras, and other paranormal investigation equipment, including which items make sense for beginners and which are better left until you have more experience.

๐ฆ Night Exploration Essentials
Mysterious travel has a habit of keeping us out after dark.
Ghost tours don’t always end early. Historic cemeteries can involve long walks over uneven ground. Paranormal investigations may last for hours. And some of the best spooky destinations are considerably colder, darker, wetter, or more mosquito-filled than they looked when you were planning the trip from your couch.
The right gear isn’t about carrying everything you could possibly need. It’s about staying comfortable, prepared, and safe while exploring after dark.
Our night-exploration guides cover practical travel gear for ghost tours, paranormal investigations, nighttime photography, Halloween trips, and other adventures that continue after sunset.

๐ท Photography & Recording Gear
Sometimes the best souvenir from a mysterious trip is the story you bring home.
Whether you’re photographing a centuries-old cemetery, recording inside a reportedly haunted building, capturing the atmosphere of a ghost town, or filming a nighttime tour, mysterious destinations can present some unusual challenges for cameras and phones.
Low light, bad weather, limited power, difficult terrain, and restrictions on tripods or flash photography can all affect what equipment is actually useful.
Our photography and recording guides focus on travel-friendly gear for documenting mysterious places without carrying an entire production studio in your backpack.

๐บ๏ธ Plan a Paranormal Road Trip
Once your gear is packed, it’s time to decide where the mystery is taking you.
Some of the best paranormal destinations aren’t found in one convenient historic district. Haunted hotels, ghost towns, forgotten cemeteries, cryptid legends, unusual museums, and strange roadside attractions can be scattered across an entire stateโor hidden miles away from the nearest major city.
That’s where a road trip comes in.
A paranormal road trip gives you the freedom to connect several mysterious destinations into one adventure, whether you’re spending a weekend exploring haunted New England or crossing the country in search of America’s strangest legends.
And you don’t have to spend the entire trip hunting ghosts.
Our road-trip guides combine haunted places, dark history, cryptids, folklore, ghost towns, unusual attractions, historic sites, and worthwhile stops along the way so you can build an itinerary around whatever mysteries interest you most.

That’s part of what makes road trips so well suited to Mysterious Travels.
You don’t always have to travel to the mystery. Sometimes you can make the mystery the route.

๐ชฆ Cemetery Travel & Etiquette
Cemeteries are some of our favorite places to explore while traveling.
Beyond their association with ghosts and the paranormal, historic cemeteries can offer a fascinating look at a destination’s history, architecture, art, symbolism, folklore, and the people who once called it home.
But there’s an important difference between visiting a historic attraction and visiting a cemetery.
Even famous cemeteries filled with tourists are still places where people have buried their loved ones. Some remain active burial grounds, and the monuments you’re photographing may belong to someone’s parent, child, spouse, or friend.
Exploring them should always come with a little extra respect.

Take photographs. Admire the monuments. Learn about the people buried there. Explore the history and listen to the legends.
But stay on permitted paths and areas, follow posted rules, never climb or sit on monuments, don’t disturb anything left at a grave, and give mourners plenty of privacy.
And if paranormal investigation isn’t explicitly permitted, don’t do it.
The best way to preserve these incredible places for future travelers is to treat them like what they are:
Places of historyโand places of remembrance.
๐ฏ๏ธ Dark Tourism Travel & Etiquette
Not every mysterious destination is fictional, legendary, or unexplained.
Some places have very realโand often very painfulโhistories.
Dark tourism can take travelers to battlefields, prisons, memorials, disaster sites, execution sites, abandoned communities, locations associated with crimes, and places connected to some of history’s most difficult events.
Visiting these places can help us better understand history in a way that reading about it sometimes cannot.
But it also comes with responsibility.
There’s a significant difference between being fascinated by dark history and treating someone else’s tragedy as entertainment.

The Story Comes Before the Spookiness
Some dark tourism destinations also develop ghost stories and paranormal legends over time.
Those stories can be fascinating, and they’re certainly something we explore on Mysterious Travels.
But when a location is associated with real death or tragedy, the people and history should come before the paranormal story.
Learn what happened.
Understand why the location matters.
Follow the site’s rules.
Be thoughtful about the photographs and videos you takeโand especially about how you share them afterward.
You can be curious about the darker side of history without forgetting the humanity behind it.
๐ Research the Mystery
Sometimes finding the place is easy.
Figuring out what actually happened there is considerably harder.
One website says the building is haunted by a woman who died in 1892. Another says she died in 1902. A ghost tour gives her a name. A local legend gives her an entirely different one.
And after enough digging, you may discover there isn’t any evidence she existed at all.
That’s part of researching mysterious places.
Ghost stories, urban legends, cryptid sightings, local folklore, and unusual historical claims often change as they’re repeated. Sometimes a documented event becomes the foundation for a legend. Sometimes several stories get combined. And sometimes a great story simply gets repeated so often that it eventually becomes accepted as fact.
We love the legends.
We also love finding out where they came from.

Best Resources for Paranormal & Historical Research
Discover the archives, historical databases, newspaper collections, maps, libraries, museums, and other resources we use when digging into mysterious places.
[Explore Our Research Resources โ]
Where to Start Your Research
You don’t need access to a secret paranormal archive to start investigating a mystery.
Some of the most useful information can be found through resources such as:
- Historic newspaper archives
- Local libraries
- State and local historical societies
- University archives
- Property and census records
- Historic maps
- National and state historic registers
- Museum collections
- Books about local history and folklore
- Cemetery records
- Digitized photographs and documents
- Contemporary news reports
The trick is learning how to compare them.
A historic newspaper can help establish that an event actually occurred. A local history book might provide context. Folklore collections can show how a legend was traditionally told. Modern tourism websites may reveal how the story has changed over time.
None necessarily tells the entire story by itself.
History, Legend or Mystery?
We don’t think discovering a rational explanation ruins a good ghost story.
In fact, sometimes the real history is even stranger.
That’s why we try to distinguish between documented history, local folklore, reported experiences, and our own interpretations when exploring mysterious places.
You can enjoy the legend without presenting it as historical fact.
You can question a paranormal claim without mocking the people who experienced it.
And you can finish researching a mystery without finding a definitive answer.
Sometimes discovering that you don’t know is part of the fun.

๐ Packing Guides for Mysterious Adventures
Packing for a mysterious adventure can look a little different from packing for the average vacation.
A weekend wandering Salem in October requires a very different suitcase from a summer cryptid road trip through Florida. A paranormal investigation might call for extra batteries and recording equipment, while a historic cemetery tour mostly requires comfortable shoes, sun protection, and respect for where you’re exploring.
The goal isn’t to pack everything you might need.
It’s to bring the right things for where you’re going, what you’ll be doing, and how long you expect to be out exploring.
Our packing guides make that a little easier.
